KICKFLIP

Bringing Steel City breaks straight to your ears, Kickflip is now established as one of breakbeat’s most respected producer/DJs. Having played gigs both up and down the country and overseas, Bob’s sets and music has inspired people all across the globe.

Kickflip’s productions encompass a wide range of styles, taking in influences from funk, drum and bass, house, hip hop and old skool hardcore. Each track is polished to work as well at home as it does on the dance floor, with low down dirty grooves, intricate attention to detail and abnormal noises to distort your mind. Past releases have received support from Meat Katie, Chris Carter, The Drumattic Twins, General MIDI, Jay Cunning, Madox, Groove Diggerz, Vandal, Tayo, The Stanton Warriors and Annie Nightingale via her show on BBC Radio 1.

Obsessed with forward-thinking sound from an early age, Bob spent his formative years growing up in a quiet part of the middle of Wales, filling the time by teaching himself production on a ghetto home studio and practicing all sorts of turntable trickery. When he hit 19, he moved to Sheffield to seek bigger and better things. Through the back room of the legendary NY Sushi and Sheffield’s premier Urban Gorilla night, he found the nu skool breaks sound, and was immediately hooked.

In the past Bob has worked with Lisa Marie Experience and Alistair Whitehead, and now in his Kickflip breaks guise has had a steady stream of releases on Akademia, Choo Choo Limited and the well respected Fat! Recordings, and has remixed for the likes of Groove Diggerz, Kid Blue, Future Funk Squad and Andy Page.

ROGUE STATE

Having spent more than 10 years honing his production, DJ and MC skills through various genres, Rogue is now in his element as one of Sheffield’s hottest musical exports. The last three years were spent working on the label, R8 Records which he co-owns and manages, and dedicating his studio time to a unique fusion of dubstep and 4×4. Always a fan of vocalists, plenty of heavyweight artists have passed through his studio including Top Cat, Daddy Freddy, YT and Bongo Chilli as well as plenty of local talents. Rogue has received airplay from BBC Radio 1, Radio 1xtra, Kiss Fm and more underground stations like Brooklyn Radio, Rinse FM and Sub.FM. With 8 vinyl releases under his belt and more on digital, Rogue’s forthcoming 12” releases include long established US label, Argon (arg0023), R8 Records (r8-005) and Bongo Chilli Records (Bongo003). You can catch Rogue DJin in his monthly residency at nationally acclaimed event Detonate/Dark Crystal at The Plug in Sheffield and other Dark Crystal events.
The greatest testimony of Rogue’s current success has come from none other than hip-hop stalwarts, The Beastie Boys, who have credited his tune ‘Lion’s Paw’ as ‘our tour anthem’ and one of ten influences of their brand new LP, ‘Tadlock’s Glasses’. Adam Horowitz speaking in the current edition of Q Mag (April 2009, p22) went on describe Rogue’s track – ‘It’s dubstep with an old-school vibe. Our record has a bit of that.’

ALEX DEADMAN

Joining the music industry at a very young age, Alex has had experience in most areas of the game but currently restricts his work to DJin, MCin, event promotion, journalism and label management. He first started DJin and MCin with jungle in the late 90s. After meeting with likeminded artists at school, The Junglist Alliance was formed, a still active crew and event promotion of which Alex is a prominent member. Plenty of DJ/MC residencies have been held over the years the main place to catch Alex now is at his own event, Dark Crystal or on one of the three weekly radio shows he hosts alongside Rogue State and Walker. (Sheffield Live FM, SUB.FM and Breaks FM). Career highs have included MCin over most of the major DnB artists, performing with Congo Natty, playing a 4hr mix on 1Xtra in 2006 and travelling to foreign lands to select for Daddy Freddy. A new lease of life was found when Alex discovered dubstep in 2005. The jungle and reggae is still there but Alex embraced the fledgling dubstep scene and pushed it as hard as possible in Sheffield through events and the creation of R8 Records, run in partnership with Rogue State. Alex is the news editor for long-established underground music mag ATM Worldwide, ensuring that the news always has a healthy dubstep quota. He also continues to broaden his performance experience with the reggae band I-Witness who have played to audiences of several thousand on the summer festival circuit last year.

JUNGLIST ALLIANCE

The Junglist Alliance was established in the late ninties by a crew of like-minded Junglist who fuelled their passion by DJin, MCin and promoting events. Early success came with night ‘Jungle Juice’ which gave the crew their first taste of event promotion in their home city of Sheffield. Since then, the JA have worked with virtually all the original jungle artists and appeared on countless shows in the UK and abroad. The current performance team consists of Timn Walker & Alex Deadman. Deadman & Walker of the Junglist Alliance have played jungle and reggae for 10 years now.
Some of the highlights have included; Running 1000+ capacity jungle allnighters in Sheffield, running a weekly night, Bass Bar for over 3 years, performing across the world in USA, Germany, Italy, France and Austria. Reggae has always been an important part of the sound, Alex and Tim have selected for some of the UK’s top reggae artists (Daddy Freddy, YT, Bongo Chilli etc..) and they also perform as lead vocalists for Sheffield based reggae and funk band, I-Witness. They both DJ and MC and use this to comunicate with the crowd as much as possible to get people involved.

Karmacist

Karmacist is just one of many pseudonyms for the multi-talented Sheffield based electronic music producer Tom Ashfield. Born in Rugby, UK, he has been creating music in one form or another for over 10 years. In 1997 Tom started playing the drums, a passion of his which now sees him play for post-rock rising stars King Capisce.

At the turn of the century, Tom began attending music lessons at college, where he was first introduced to the wonders of electronic composition. Although he didn’t quite see the full potential of using computers to make music at first, it sparked an intrigue and desire to try and see what boundaries he could push, as the freedom of using a computer as opposed to just live instruments opened his mind to the possibilities of the music he could create.

In 2005 he moved to Sheffield and began producing electronic music in earnest. At the time he was heavily influenced by IDM, and, feeling liberated by the punk attitude of a bustling breakcore scene, Tom set about making music that pushed boundaries and broke rules. During this period Tom went by the name of Harmacist and enjoyed successful releases on net labels such as Sociopath Recordings, Viral Records & Future Corporation Records.

In 2007, Tom decided to switch to Karmacist and focused on creating dubstep, which he saw as a genre that had the potential to more than just another mindless style of dance music. With his style sorted, Tom began to create his new tunes with aplomb, self releasing an album and an EP, and playing out around Sheffield at such popular nights as Sulphate & Rip City.

His techno influenced and percussion led dubstep has been garnering attention from local DJs aplenty, and he recently featured as a guest DJ on R8 Records’ show on Sub.fm.
