“Karmacist is one of the many guises of Sheffield based maestro Tom Ashfield, and the debut release on Acoustic Code finds him flexing his dubstep muscles.
Nirvana drifts dreamily along on a wave of soft and shaky percussion, with a purring bass complementing the plucked mandolin strings strewn throughout. These features add give the tune a real eastern vibe, and it’s the kind of tune you can almost imagine Tibetan monks grooving along to.
The flip side stands in stark contrast to Nirvana, as menacing chords and shuffling drums create a sinister atmosphere. There are shades of Benga and Reprazent present, but the intriguing build and release of tension and unique percussion give it a sound and style all its own.
Neither tracks are downright dance floor smashers, but in this age of cut and paste production, this is by no means a bad thing. The level of musicality on display, in particular the use of song structure and percussion (Tom also drums for rising post rock stars King Capisce) make the tunes rise above your more generic ten-a-penny dubstep tunes, and I highly recommend this release to anyone interested in quality electronic music.”
